Akan, Wisconsin
Akan is a town in Richland County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 444 at the 2000 Census. The unincorporated communities of Five Points and Jimtown are located in the town. History Akan was named for road builder Robert Akan, who helped construct a road to Rockbridge. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.1 square miles (93.6 km2), all of it land. Demographics At the 2000 census, there were 444 people, 158 households, and 125 families residing in the town. The population density was 12.3 per square mile (4.7/km2). There were 211 housing units at an average density of 5.8 per square mile (2.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 99.10% White, 0.90% from other races. The Maya death gods (also Ah Puch, Ah Cimih, Ah Cizin, Hun Ahau, Kimi, or Yum Kimil) known by a variety of names, are two basic types of death gods who are respectively represented by the 16th-century Yucatec deities Hunhau and Uacmitun Ahau mentioned by Spanish Bishop Diego de Landa. Akan religion comprises the traditional beliefs and religious practices of the Akan people of Ghana and eastern Ivory Coast. Akan religion is referred to as Akom. Although most Akan people have identified as Christians since the early 20th century, Akan religion remains practiced by some and is often syncretized with Christianity. Lake Akan
is a lake in Kushiro, Hokkaidō, Japan. It is located in Akan National Park and is a Ramsar Site. History Volcanic activity formed the lake some 6,000 years ago, when a lava dam was formed. The lake used to have a clarity of 8–9 meters in the 1930s. Pollution from local hotspring resorts has decreased the transparency to 3–4 meters.
